Yorick had told me he bought Counterstrike: Source. For the one’s who don’t know what Counterstrike is: it’s a is a team-based, tactical first-person shooter. If you haven’t played Counterstrike before (e.g. are new to Counterstrike) you might stumble upon a few problems, such as not being able to hit anything properly and dieing quickly. The more experienced players know a lot about how the Source Engine works, how to use certain weapons and which tricks to use on specific maps. And since I also experienced those problems I came up with the idea to write a basic Counterstrike Source guide.

Aiming and Shooting
Aiming and shooting is what Counterstrike is about. Aim, shoot, cover, the three keywords to keep in mind. Every weapon has a certain amount of recoil and weight. This will affect the way the weapon handles and the purposes it can fulfil. If you are netering close combat then your best bet is a shotgun. Shotguns are perfect for doing a massive amount of damage in close combat. Submachine guns also pack quite a punch, they have a large firing rate. The downside of the quick firing rate is that you will be out of ammo in no time. When entering a close combat situation you should ‘spray’ as much bullets as you can. Also try aiming for the head since that can make a huge difference during close combat. If you are at a medium range an AK or a Colt will prove to be your best companion. The trick is to fire bursts (2-4 bullets) of bullets. Now you should try aiming for his chest, because if you miss his chest there always is a chance of the bullets going up trough his head. If you are a more experienced player then you might want to aim for the head right away. At long ranges you should use a sniper rifle, either the infamous AWP (Artic Warfare Magnum) or the Scout. The AWP does a lot of damage but takes long to reload. The Scout is weaker then the AWP but reloads much faster.

Crosshair scaling
Your can set your crosshair scale in the options menu. But you only got a couple of limited options there. Luckily Counterstrike: Source provides you with console commands. One of these console commands allows you to increase or decrease the size of your crosshair. Changing the crosshair scale only requires a few simple steps. First of all, enter the console window of Counterstrike: Source by hitting the tilde-key (~). Now you can change your crosshair scale by entering this console command: “cl_crosshairscale ”. I recommend using “cl_crosshairscale 2200” for the average 15”-19” monitor. If you got a widescreen monitor, like I do, then you should use “cl_crosshairscale 3500”. Higher numbers means smaller crosshairs.
