Basic Counterstrike: Source Tips & Tricks Part II

Cover and Stealth
Cover and stealth are two things most new players forget. Since Counterstrike: Source is a realistic shooter you can get killed by one shot. To prevent this from happening you need to take cover and sneak around. If you encounter a group (3+) of enemy’s you most likely want to take cover and take them out one by one. On most maps there are enough objects to take cover behind. Those objects can be crates, file cabinets and so on. Remember, you can shoot trough wooden objects such as crates. Use this feature in your advantage. You just need to know the maps a bit. Taking cover for a longer period of time is often considered as ‘camping’ (staying on one spot for an extended period of time). But in my opinion taking cover is a great strategy because it often works out great.
Stealth is also a very important thing to keep in mind. If you walk normally people can hear your footsteps and determine your position. That’s why you need to press ‘shift’ if you want to sneak around. If you sneak around your enemy wont hear any footsteps. If you combine stealth with cover you will become a more efficient killer.

Sound and Prediction
Talking about footsteps, sound is also an important aspect of Counterstrike: Source. More then 80% of the players on public server wont sneak around using the shift key. So you will be able to hear them walking almost all the time. I recommend a good headset while playing Counterstrike: Source. The Sennheiser PC-160 does the job perfectly. Now you can hear you enemy’s, so you know where they are.
This brings us to another subject you want to master: prediction of the enemy routes and thoughts. If you hear an enemy walking you need to listen carefully to determine which way they are going. This will enable you to predict the path they will take (Most players tend to use the same route often). It requires a bit of knowledge of the routes available on the maps. But if you master this technique you can outsmart your enemy quite easily. Another thing you should do is to think like your enemy. If you are under fire you need to try figuring out what your enemy is thinking. Now you can try predicting his next move (most players are really predictable). For example you can hide around the corner and wait till he approaches you. Then you pop around the corner right before he reaches it. Boom, enemy down! This way you can easily fool your enemy and pretend as if you are retreating. Most enemy’s will follow you straight away and become and easy target for you.
